Camenzind’s role is to document as well as reflect critically on the Urban Incubator project as a whole, to publish written and audio material that responds to the built environment in Belgrade and also to provide the interface between the project and the inhabitants of Savamala, as well as providing a training for a group of willing local participants in all aspects of magazine and radio documentary production.

For the Camenzind goes Belgrade Project, we have reinforced our team with:

Ana Djordjevic-Petrovic, a Belgrade-based graphic designer and activist, with masters in interior design. During her 15 years of working as a freelancer she has worked on a widerange of design concepts for a diverse spectrum of clients. This work has variously included book layouts, packaging design, visual identity, promotional material and video art. Recently she has expanded her field of activity, initiating several projects to improve Belgrade’s public

Leila Peacock, whose work encompasses writing, drawing, bookbinding, video and radio. She holds a Masters in Literature and all of her work plays with language, metaphor and the mechanisms of fiction. Her work has been exhibited in Glasgow (CCA, The Arches, GAS), Berlin (NBI, Mother Drucker), Toulouse (L’espace Croix Baragnon) and most recently at Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. Her speculative essays that merge fact and fiction have been published in Tank, The White Review, Kilimanjaro and The Junket, as well as an upcoming piece for The Bulletin of The Serving Library.

Editorial

Architecture, although we often don’t realize it, has always played a central role in our culture; in our homes, places of worship, offices, and shops. The 21st century – called by some, ‘the century of the cities’ – has brought much socio-economic transformation to Africa. The African continent will most probably experience immense population growth – the United Nations estimates that Africa’s population could more than triple in this century. Most of this growth will take place in cities – architecture will play an intrinsic role in this process.

There is no platform in the form of a magazine in East Africa to discuss this situation. A gap this magazine seeks to fill. A magazine that is a vehicle for open criticism and constructive exchange of opinions; a platform to launch innovative solutions; a place for the discussion of typically local phenomena, and as a source of information for decision makers.

To kick-start this magazine, a four-week workshop was setup by Camenzind Magazine from Zurich, to work with a group of young, ambitious and vibrant university students and recent graduates in how to form a future editorial team for a magazine that will fill this lack of an East-African architectural magazine. The workshop included training in text writing and editing, photography, art and production, and finally marketing and strategy to ensure the long-term existence of the magazine.

After fun (and loud) discussions, bouncing ideas back and forth, we finally came up with the magazine title ANZA, a Swahili word meaning “start”. We found this name suitable as it references both the beginning of this East African architectural magazine, and the start of a long but hopeful journey for East African cities and their peoples. Aside from this name being ideologically powerful, we all agreed that it was also typographically beautiful.
One may well ask: ‘can a diverse, multidisciplinary, student-published magazine, dealing with issues concerning people and spaces, issued biannually, compete with newer, more interactive, faster formats like blogs and online forums?’ Our reply: one can never know unless they ANZA!
